Beylerbeyi Palace Museum Istanbul: what to see, tickets, visiting tips

Beylerbeyi Palace is another magnificent palace located on the Asian side of the Bosphorus, in Uskudar district. Beylerbeyi, which means “Lord of the Lords,” was established in 1865 as a resting retreat and summer palace for Sultan Abdülaziz. It is as large as Dolmabahce Palace and hosts royal guests such as the Duchess, Duke of Windsor, and Empress Eugenie of France.

The scenery is spectacular, especially from the Bosphorus. A big reception hall, pool, fountain, rooms, furnishings, and bath pavilions for men and women are available. It was used as a prison for Sultan Abdülhamid II until his death in 1918.

We highly recommend you take your time at Beylerbeyi Palace to enjoy this historical mansion with the impressive Bosphorus views.

What to expect from your visit?

Beylerbeyi Palace was designed by architects Hagop and Sarkis Balyan and completed in 1865. It was built in the Neo-Baroque style and was used as a summer palace for the Ottoman sultans. It consists of 24 rooms, 6 halls and a Turkish bath.

The view of the palace is very exquisite that is reached by a twisted staircase located in the center. The downstairs hall of the palace has a beautiful large pool. You’ll see nautical-themed decorations all over the palace.

Some of the furniture in the palace was processed by Sultan Abdulhamid II, who was imprisoned here from 1918 until his death. Another interesting information about the palace is that the French Empress Eugenie was very impressed with the windows of the palace while she was staying here, and she wanted the same window model to be used for the Tuileries Palace in Paris.
